Level 1: Operator

As a Level 1 operator, you can run a normal Sunday that someone else has prepared. Lyrics, announcements, sermon.

You are not expected to handle an unusual week alone. Somebody more experienced should be around for those. And when unsure, you should ask for help.

Technical

  • Spotting errors in the project or scenes
  • Opening the software and presenting to the screen
  • Running the lyrics in time with the worship leader
  • Running the announcements
  • Running the sermon slides on the preacher’s cue
  • Knowing when to blank the screen and bringing it back

Communication

  • Confirming the song order with the worship leader beforehand
  • Checking the sermon slides with the preacher beforehand
  • Communicating when you’re not ready
  • Asking for help early when needed
  • Telling the lead early when you can’t make it to Sunday

Recovery

  • Staying calm when an issue arises rather than panicking
  • Getting help calmly when you are not sure what to do

Heart

  • Turning up on time
  • Familiarising yourself with the songs in the list

Modules

M1.1 Basics of screen setup

Getting the picture on the projector and taking it away again: starting the output, going full screen, blanking, and shutting down at the end.

M1.2 Basics of slide operation

Running announcements and sermon slides while someone else keeps the lyrics. Mostly about following the person speaking rather than the slide in front of you.

M1.3 Basics of lyrics operation

The hardest thing at this level, so it comes last. Reading a worship leader, changing on the last syllable, and what to do when a song doesn’t go the way the run sheet says.

M1.4 Effective communication

The conversations that make Sunday work: checking the song order and the sermon slides beforehand, saying when you’re not ready, and giving the lead early notice when you can’t make a week.

M1.5 When things go wrong

What to do when something breaks mid-service. At this level that’s one thing: blank, don’t guess, get help.

M1.6 Heart of worship

Why the desk is a place of worship and not just a job at the back. Knowing the songs before Sunday, turning up when the team turns up, and staying with God while you concentrate.
