Overview

For our church, we run the sound desk: the mixer, the mics, the monitors and the room. Four levels, one job, done well.

We serve the congregation, not the kit. Our job is to help people worship and hear from God without the technology getting in the way. The person in the back row who can hear every word and never thinks about how. That’s the win.

The best audio work is the work nobody notices. If nobody mentions it at all, you’ve done it perfectly. We’re not here to be impressive.

We are part of the service, not a department beside it. Turn up prayerful, not just early.

Mistakes are not sin. Own it, fix it, move on. A team that panics about mistakes hides them, and hidden mistakes are the ones that grow.

Reliability beats brilliance. The volunteer who is always there, on time, doing the simple thing well is worth more than the clever one who is occasionally spectacular.

We look after each other. Nobody serves every week. If you’re struggling, say so and we’ll cover you.

We handle people’s stories carefully. Anything personal that passes through this team stays with this team unless we’ve been given permission.

Everyone starts with Intro, which isn’t a level. It’s getting to know the team and the room before you touch anything.

LevelNameTrusted to
IntroObserverBe at the desk. Nothing is yours yet.
1OperatorRun a normal Sunday on a desk that someone else set up and checked.
2Senior OperatorOwn a normal Sunday from start to finish, soundcheck included. Nobody needs to check.
3MentorSee problems coming. Support the operators. Train new people.
4Ministry LeaderRun the team.
  • Level 1 should be easy to reach. We want as many Level 1s as possible. There is no shame in staying here for years.
  • Level 2 is the long-term goal for most of the team. If a Level 2 is on the rota, nobody needs to worry about that Sunday.
  • Mentor is a support role, not a better operator. We only need two or three.
  • Ministry Leader is one person. Called the lead throughout this pathway.

The same four things run all the way up. What changes is how much of each is expected.

What it means
TechnicalThe desk. Getting a clear, balanced mix into the room.
CommunicationThe worship leader, the preacher, the team, the church.
RecoveryStaying calm and sorting it out. Something always happens.
HeartWhy we do this, and how we treat people while we do it.

Technical is most of Intro and Level 1. By Level 2 you’ve learned nearly all of it. What separates Mentor and Ministry Leader isn’t more technical skill. It’s seeing problems coming, sorting them out, and looking after people.

Find your level, read what you’re trusted with, and work through the modules with whoever is training you. When you’ve done them all, a leader signs you off.
