Intro: Observer

Intro isn’t a level yet. You’re here to learn the shape of a Sunday, meet the team and get a feel for the room. Nothing is your responsibility, and you shouldn’t feel any weight.

Most people are through this in two or three Sundays.

Technical

  • Following a Sunday from start to finish
  • Naming the kit and how it’s connected
  • Why the team arrives when it does

Communication

  • Meeting the people you’ll be working with
  • Saving your questions for after the service
  • Saying when you don’t understand something

Recovery

  • Watching how the operator recovers
  • Staying out of the way while they do

Heart

  • Why we do this, in your own words
  • Safety around the kit
I.1 Why we do this — 30 min, midweek or over coffee

Read the Why we do this section, then talk it through with the lead. It’s not a lecture. They should be asking you what you think.

I.2 Joining the team — 20 min

Induction: expectations, rota commitment, what to do when you can’t make it. Safeguarding form completed.

I.3 The room — 30 min, in person, empty room

Walk the signal path with a leader. Where the power is, what order things go on and off. Afterwards, draw it from memory.

Ends when: you can describe the path without prompting.

I.4 Reading a service — 2 Sundays, shadowing

Shadow an operator for two full services. They narrate what they’re doing as they do it. You write down every moment you didn’t understand and bring the list to the debrief.

Signed by the team lead.
