Keyboard setup checklist

This is a condensed checklist if you already know what everything does. For more info on each, read on below

Keyboard

iPad

IEM

Misc.

The keyboard should be on the left side of the stage, next to the speaker

Setup Placement

The setup might seem complicated, but that’s because there’s a few parts to this:

  1. The iPad for Sunday Sounds
  2. Charger to charge iPad
  3. Audio out cable to mixer
  4. Interface for IEM
  5. Sustain pedal

To setup Sunday sounds, we just need the ipad connected to the keyboard.

Section titled “To setup Sunday sounds, we just need the ipad connected to the keyboard.”

Here, we use a usb-c hub because we’ll use that later:

Keys setup simple

It’s as simple as that. As long as the app is open, it should output sound. Although it can be a bit buggy. A simple app restart often resolves the problem.

So what are the other cables for?

Keys setup hub

Connect charger into the other usb-c hub to power charge the iPad.
It will work without it since the keyboard will use the battery from the iPad.
But we wouldn’t want it to power off in the middle of service.

Keys setup iem

The IEM setup is a whole different system. It lets us listen to the output from the mixer.

The only thing connecting this to our previous system is the power. We plug this interface to the usb hub, just to power it.

The reset is self-explanatory. Audio cable directly to mixer for the sound itself.
And sustain pedal for sustain.

  1. Setup keyboard stand & put keyboard on it
    • The shorter part of the stand should be at the top
    • To change the height of the stand, pull on the pin, don’t turn it
  2. Plug in sustain pedal
    • The hole is on the very left of the keyboard
  3. Setup music sheet stand
    • This stand is in a separate bag inside the keyboard bag. It’s foldable.
  4. Put iPad on music sheet stand, plug into USB hub
    • USB hub should connect directly to iPad
  5. Connect keyboard cable from USB hub to keyboard
    • Make sure to align the hole on the keyboard. The rotation matters
    • The hole is labeled “Device”
  6. Connect charger to USB hub
    • This connects to the power extension
    • In the USB hub, this should be the hole at the very end
  7. Connect left & right audio jack cable to mixer
    • Left goes to “Piano” on the mixer
    • Right goes to “Keys pads” on the mixer
  8. Finally, IEM. Put interface on stand & connect power to USB hub
    • Might want to put it sideways so that it stays better on the stand
  9. Connect XLR (AUX 1) from mixer to interface input 1
    • Purple cable. A bit short so might need to pull the mixer closer
  10. Connect IEM/earphone to interface
    • Self explanatory

Phew, that’s it for all the connections!

Now, let’s make sure everything is working. If there’s no volume coming out, and the mixer is setup properly, here’s the steps to check what’s going on

  • Make sure app is open
  • When you press a note, the app should say it’s outputing sound
Check by looking at this bar. If it’s like below, it’s working. If no green, no sound.
In that case, restart the app or re-plug the cable

Keys sunday sounds

  • Make sure keyboard master volume is set
  • Press ALT. Now if you turn the Data/Volume knob, it should set the master volume
  • Set around 80-90. The number should appear on the screen

Keys volume

If still no sound, check the connections. Otherwise, the problem might be in the mixer.

To get IEM working, same as above, make sure everything is set properly on the mixer side.

1. Make sure Phantom power is OFF, Output is Direct
Section titled “1. Make sure Phantom power is OFF, Output is Direct”

Play and make a sound. While doing that, increase the volume on input 1 slowly. There should be light, that means that there’s input. You might not hear anything yet.

Turn it up until just below it clips. If the color is red, it clips. So go up until there, and lower it down and make sure it doesn’t clip ever.

If there’s no light even when you max it & something is playing, that means there’s no input. Check the mixer or the input connection.

3. Increase the output until comfortable (for keyboardist)
Section titled “3. Increase the output until comfortable (for keyboardist)”

This is the knob to control for loudness.

If nothing is coming out, and input is fine, that probably means there’s something wrong with the earphone.
